From 2014 to 2019, Latia Resource Centre (LRC) successfully implemented the Development of the Latia Resource Centre and its Agricultural Training Programme (LRC-ATP), a transformative institutional capacity-building project that positioned LRC as one of Kenya’s leading providers of practical, market-driven agricultural technical and vocational education and training (ATVET).
The project strengthened LRC’s governance, strategic direction, institutional systems, human resource capacity, and financial sustainability while establishing the Latia Agripreneurship Institute (LAI) as an accredited centre of excellence for competency-based training in horticulture, dairy, and pig production. It also led to the creation of Latia Agribusiness Solutions (LAS) to commercialize advisory, incubation, and farm management services, developed innovative apprenticeship and incubation programmes, integrated digital technologies into training, invested in modern training infrastructure, and created an ecosystem that connects farmers with technical experts, markets, finance, and agribusiness service providers. Through these achievements, the project significantly enhanced youth employability, entrepreneurship, climate-smart agriculture, and private sector engagement in agricultural skills development while laying the foundation for LRC’s continued regional growth and long-term sustainability.
The project was funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Development in Higher Education (NICHE), administered by Nuffic.
It was implemented by Latia Resource Centre (LRC) in partnership with the Maastricht School of Management (MSM), with strategic collaboration from Faraja Trust, GIZ, TVETA, NITA, CDACC, Egerton University, Kenya Institute of Management, Koppert Biological Systems, Delphy, Agritech, and numerous public and private sector stakeholders. These partnerships enabled the development of accredited curricula, modern agricultural infrastructure such as greenhouse farming, innovative apprenticeship programmes, institutional systems, and industry linkages that continue to strengthen agricultural education and agribusiness development in Kenya.
