The Green Business Project empowered young people and women in rural Kenya with the technical, entrepreneurial, and life skills needed to access sustainable employment and self-employment in the green economy. Implemented across Kajiado county, the project strengthened Latia Agripreneurship Institute an Agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ATVET) institution by integrating market-driven green skills, business development, and incubation into vocational training. Using the innovative Green Colleges approach, the project combined practical technical training with entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership, mentoring, and life skills to prepare trainees for successful careers in agriculture and other environmentally sustainable enterprises.
The project reached 250 women and youth, facilitated internships, established Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), supported business start-ups through livelihood grants, and developed a green business incubation centre to nurture emerging agripreneurs and green enterprises. The green Business Incubation Center is located at Latia Agripreneurship Institute and has state of the art steering unit with over 15 bullocks, modern dairy unit with over 10 dairy cows and a milk processor and a biogas supporting the institute’s kitchen.
The project was funded by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and implemented through a strategic partnership between LRC Foundation, Anglican Development Services (ADS), and Zizi Afrique Foundation. LRC Foundation led the development of the Green Business Incubation Centre, Welthungerhilfe provided grant management, coordination, and project monitoring, Anglican Development Services implemented community-level project activities, while Zizi Afrique Foundation led advocacy, research, learning, and curriculum development. Together, the partners strengthened TVET institutions, promoted green entrepreneurship, and created sustainable livelihood opportunities for women and youth across the project counties.
