Lighting Up Possibility: Henry Kanunka’s Story of Change in Ewaso Nyiro

Everything changed on 10th August 2025.
On that day, Henry attended a community engagement forum organized under the Kawi Safi Mashinani Project, in partnership with LRC Foundation and GIZ, alongside a local solar provider, Sun King. What seemed like a simple meeting would soon become a turning point for his household.
Through a clear and relatable demonstration, Henry was introduced to a “pay-as-you-go” model that reimagined energy access. For the first time, he saw that the money he regularly spent on kerosene could instead be redirected toward owning a clean, reliable source of light, a Sun King home solar lighting system.
He made the decision.
And the impact was immediate.
Today, Henry’s home is filled with bright, clean light. His children can now study comfortably at night without straining their eyes or inhaling toxic fumes. The household feels safer, healthier, and more hopeful.
But the benefits extend beyond the home.
With reliable lighting, Henry is now able to tend to his livestock after dark, protecting them from predators and ensuring their wellbeing. What was once a daily struggle has transformed into an opportunity for productivity and peace of mind.
